Illinois is going to get everything they can handle from the Blue Devils. Duke will play offensively, and the Illini have a defense that can make newcomer Walker Eget look good behind center.
The all-time history between the two programs is on the line, too. Illinois leads the series 2-1, with the last victory coming last season against new Miami quarterback Dariah Mensah. Duke will have a chance to even the series, but the Illini can put this matchup away.

This is a complicated game. Illinois torched Duke last season, but entering the 2026 matchup, I don’t have as much confidence.
When you compare the offenses, Illinois has a better group. Eget struggled greatly against the Green Wave. Katin Houser had one of the most efficient games in program history.
Duke has the edge over Illinois on defense, though. They always have a solid defensive unit with Manny Diaz at the helm. The Illini defense has been the talk of the town, as UAB was able to move the ball at times.
I believe this game will hinge on one thing and one thing only. Can Houser move the football?
Houser is the key to Illinois’ success in 2026. If he comes out and gives us another performance as he did against the Blazers, then I think the Illini will come out with a solid win.
If Duke can shut Houser down at all, then this could be a long Saturday for the Orange and Blue. Illinois’ defense will struggle and give up some points against Duke. The Illini offense needs to be able to keep up and outscore the Blue Devils.
Houser will continue to play well. I think he adds to what he did against UAB. He settled into the second half last week and was hitting his spots.
Illinois’ defense will likely play a little better, but I still see Duke putting up points. This Illini defense has a lot to prove. At the end of the day, this game should go in favor of Illinois.
