Duke provides Illinois football the ultimate stress test before Big Ten season

When you hear that Illinois is playing Duke, you don’t think much of it.

The Blue Devils aren’t exactly the cream of the crop when it comes to college football programs. You usually think about basketball when Duke pops up. In 2026, the Blue Devils have one of the most dangerous weapons in the game, though.

Illinois is going to have one of the best stress tests on Saturday. We aren’t scheduling cupcakes like some other programs. The Illini will have to go up against a Duke team with running back Nate Sheppard in the backfield.

Sheppard had such a good game in week one against Tulane that the Doak Walker Award gave him the Running Back of the Week honors.

In the Tulane game last week, Sheppard went for an eye-popping 227 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries. He averaged 6.5 yards per carry as well.

This is Sheppard picking up right where he left off last season. The now-Sophomore had 200 carries for 1,132 yards and 11 touchdowns as a freshman.

The fact that Sheppard earned the Doak Walker Running Back of the Week is already scary enough, but there is another stat that sends chills down my spine.

According to Cam Mellor of Pro Football Network, Sheppard ranks third in all of college football in most yards after contact. In week one alone, he had 165 of his 227 yards coming after a defender contacted him. That means there were a lot of missed tackles.

Also, in week one, Illinois had a total of, I believe, 16 missed tackles against UAB. A Blazers team that is much weaker than the Blue Devils.

That is why this is the ultimate stress test for Illinois. We are going up against a Duke running back who is talented and can break tackles. The Illini are a bad tackling team. It will be a good game to see where we are as a program.

Illinois football was able to get Nate Sheppard before he broke out in 2025

Sheppard has been a pretty impressive running back since stepping foot on a college field. The fact he went for over 1,100 yards last season as a freshman is a great accomplishment.

Most Illinois fans remember that we beat down the Blue Devils in 2025. Illinois took that game 45-19. Thankfully, this was before Duke let Sheppard run wild.

In the first three games of his career, one of which was against Illinois, Sheppard had a total of 15 carries. In the game against the Illini, he went for five carries for 24 yards.

After game three, Sheppard exploded. He didn’t have fewer than 12 carries in a game, and he had five games of at least 90 yards rushing.

This is going to be a tough ask for the Illini on Saturday. I am going to need to see a better tackling team, or Sheppard is going to run all over our defense. The ultimate stress test is stressful, but it is very necessary as we head into the Big Ten slate.
