Illinois Basketball: 5 recruits Illini fans should keep tabs on in June
2. Ben Shtolzberg
At this point in the recruiting cycle, it is hard to build a relationship if you are just starting to get involved in a recruitment. But Illinois is trying to be one of the programs vying for Ben Shtolzberg’s commitment.
Shtolzberg is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound point guard from Notre Dame High School and resides in Northridge, California. He isn’t rated or ranked by 247Sports, but judging by the quality of scholarship offers, this kid is someone who the recruiting sites have overlooked.
As of right now, there are 14 programs that have come in with an offer to Shtolzberg. Among some of the bigger names to offer the talented guard include the likes of Xavier, Creighton and Virginia Tech.
Illinois has yet to come in with an offer to Shtolzberg, but in an interview with Jake Weingarten of Stockrisers, the California native mentioned the Illini as one of the new teams that are getting more involved in his recruitment. What made Illinois eye this kid?
I believe it is coming from new assistant coach, Chester Frazier. Frazier was with Virginia Tech when they originally offered Shtolzberg, so that might be where the interest is coming from. I expect the Illini to come in with an offer to him here in the coming weeks.
Shtolzberg does have three official visits set as of right now. He is heading to Rutgers on June 5, Creighton on June 12 and Northwestern on July 1. That leaves two official visits open. Keep an eye on the Illini in this recruitment. They are starting late, but I am curious to see if we can get involved and maybe even sneak in an official visit.
