While every season is important, perhaps this upcoming season holds the most significance for Bret Bielema and the Illinois football program.

Bielema’s arrival in December 2020 signified a culture change for the Illini, and during his tenure, he has provided just that. However, as is evident from previous Illinois head coaches, success can be hard to sustain.

This makes the 2026 season so crucial, especially given how much Bielema has influenced both this coaching staff and this roster. The amount of turnover in both categories is staggering, and it should really highlight whether this program can be consistently competitive.

Bret Bielema's greatest coaching effort will be in 2026 due to so much Illinois football turnover

Losing and replacing, essentially, an entire defensive coaching staff is going to prove to be a daunting challenge for Bielema to keep the program winning.

While it is likely that the newest Defensive Coordinator, Bobby Hauck, and his crew will be able to maintain success, and maybe even add some, if it fails, it could be an indictment of Bielema’s coaching evaluation.

Likewise, this fall's roster is going to see some of the most changes in terms of starters in quite some time. While the team returned 16 starters at the start of last season, that number will be greatly diminished.

It will be interesting to see how Bielema manages this lack of program and system experience, as well as overall college experience, with the newest recruiting class, and what kind of success they can have.

Despite the many question marks Illinois has going into next year, fans should be at ease knowing Bielema is at the helm. His body of work is already impressive, and his legend as an Illini should only continue to grow.
