Newest Illinois defensive coordinator should excite fans

Bobby Hauck’s recent addition to the Illinois football coaching staff should be able to right the ship.

Despite being added late in the coaching cycle, the Illinois football hiring of Bobby Hauck to lead their defense is an incredible addition that should work well to fix the defensive issues as of late.

While his path to the Illini is unorthodox, retiring and unretiring in the span of about a week, Hauck will bring stability, leadership, and an identity to the defense.

Stability is something rarely seen in today’s college football world, but that is exactly what Hauck provides. With a clear dislike for head coaching now, it is unlikely he leaves for another major job anytime soon.

Given the recent turnover the Illini have seen at the defensive coordinator position in the past few years, locking down a consistent face and voice at the coaching position is crucial in supporting team and recruitment success.

Moreover, his time as a head coach brings great leadership and dependability. With Hauck at the helm, there is genuine trust that he can run things well on his own.

Comparatively, with Aaron Henry last season, there were legitimate questions as to whether or not Bret Bielema needed to step in and help call the defense.

The trust he has earned to come in and confidently lead this defense is something that positively impacts the roster at hand and the rest of the coaching staff.

Finally, the most valuable thing Hauck brings to the Illini is a defensive identity, something recent iterations have desperately lacked.

Since the Devon Witherspoon-led defense of 2022, in which the team bustled with ballhawks, the Illini have lacked any sort of fear factor on their back end. While some of that is dependent on the skill of the players, a lot of it also has to do with the scheme.

Fortunately, Hauck’s 3-3-5 defensive scheme should work well to spark some notoriety for the unit. With it being rarely used across college football and even rarer in the Big Ten, teams will really have to do their homework to prepare for Illinois.

Likewise, the scheme should fit the upcoming stars on the defense perfectly. In a system that predicates itself on speed and versatility, this incoming freshman class, as well as speedsters already on the roster, should be able to feast on opposing offenses.

With all of these factors in mind, there is a very good reason to believe that the Illini absolutely nailed the hire, and it should lead to another successful season in the Bielema era.
