The Atlanta Falcons acquired a gem in former Illinois safety Sydney Brown, and it hardly cost them anything in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.
On March 20, 2026, the Eagles traded safety Sydney Brown and swapped fourth- and sixth- round draft picks with the Atlanta Falcons. The trade was originally seen as low-risk by Falcons fans, but it is quickly turning into a great deal for Atlanta.
The St. Stephen's Episcopal star has been a regular fixture on special teams throughout his pro career, but he is also starting to make a bigger impact on defense with plays like this against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night.
Punch it out, Sydney Brown!

Brown is starting to find his footing in Atlanta's defense, playing in 32% of their defensive snaps so far this season. In his last two seasons with Philadelphia, he only played 22% of snaps in 2025 and 12% in 2024.
The former Illini may have some things working against him, especially with the young players who are ahead of him on the Atlanta roster. If Brown continues to elevate his game, he will certainly be a name to keep an eye on throughout the season.
Illinois football fans should keep an eye on where Sydney Brown ends up at season's end
According to spotrac.com, the only two safeties signed to the Falcons past 2027 are Billy Bowman Jr. and Xavier Watts, with the rest set to become free agents after this season. Atlanta will have plenty of decisions to make in their secondary, especially with Brown's improvement from last season.
In just five games, Brown has recorded 20 total tackles, one forced fumble, and one pass deflection. If he continues playing the way that he is, Brown will be on pace to have the best season of his career.
If Brown can continue this trend and combine it with his prowess on special teams, his resumé will become very intriguing by season's end. He can become great depth for Bowman and Watts in Atlanta, or even find a home somewhere else with a team that needs a safety.
To be fair, this is a small sample size, so we will need to see more from Brown as the season goes on. But as of right now, it's hard not to say that Atlanta won their trade with Philadelphia.
