Big-time playmaker from Texas set to take Illinois football official visit
Illinois football wants to give our quarterbacks weapons, and the Lone Star State is where we might end up snagging a huge wide receiver.
Bret Bielema and the Illini coaching staff are building out quite the class of 2025. We have six commitments right now, and this includes the quarterback of the future, Carson Boyd.
Boyd is going to need weapons, though. On Monday, the Illini managed to add a big-time wide receiver, Brayden Trimble. He is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound in-state recruit who will be catching touchdowns in Champaign. But there needs to be more talent at the wide receiver position for Boyd in the future.
A great addition to the program would be Terry Shelton. He is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide receiver from Ranchview High School in Texas. He is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 629 player in the class of 2025. He is also the No. 102 wide receiver in the country and the No. 109 player coming out of the state of Texas.
Shelton is looking at a handful of programs, and he has already started to set up official visits. According to 247Sports, his visits started with Kansas on April 12. He is then slated to visit Illinois on May 31, Texas Tech on June 7, and TCU on June 21.
Height is a focus when it comes to the wide receiver position for the Illinois football program
I love this new version of the Illini. We are landing talented players and more are eyeing the team. On top of that, the clear focus is for Illinois to be really good on the offensive side of the ball.
Luke Altmyer is going to be around for a couple more years. Illinois has a nice stable of quarterbacks behind him too. The Illini coaching staff has been putting not just talented weapons around these passers, but we are building the wide receiver corps to be one of the tallest I have ever seen.
On the roster right now, the Illini have a 6-foot-5 wide receiver, Ashton Hollins, who will be one of the top pass-catchers this season. We have seven wide receivers between 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-4 as well.
The height trend isn’t stopping anytime soon. Trimble, who committed days ago, is 6-foot-2. Illinois now has a chance of landing Shelton, who stands at 6-foot-3.
Illinois is recruiting at a level I haven’t seen in a while. We are trying to build a brand of football that is exciting in Champaign. Let’s see if we can pull in a kid like Shelton and continue building toward that goal.
