It was a bit of a wild week in college football, and this changed the potential College Football Playoff rankings for 2024.
The first set of official rankings won’t come out until Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m. EST. They will be released each Tuesday following at around the same time until Sunday, December 8, which is selection day.
Week two of the College Football Playoff rankings are going to be a bit different. The Illini took down a solid Kansas program. Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois. And some of the good teams who I thought were powerhouses struggled against what should be inferior opponents.
Taking the top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings for the second week in a row is the Texas Longhorns. They are trucking along right now and at this point, I feel like they would be the No. 1 team if the College Football Playoff rankings were released today.
Team | How | Current Rank | Previous Rank | CFP Seed |
---|---|---|---|---|
Texas Longhorns | SEC Champs | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Georgia Bulldogs | At-Large | 2 | 2 | 5 |
Ohio State Buckeyes | Big Ten Champs | 3 | 6 | 2 |
Alabama Crimson Tide | At-Large | 4 | 4 | 6 |
Miami Hurricanes | ACC Champs | 5 | 5 | 3 |
USC Trojans | At-Large | 6 | N/R | 7 |
Ole Miss Rebels | At-Large | 7 | 11 | 8 |
Tennessee Volunteers | At-Large | 8 | N/R | 9 |
Oregon Ducks | At-Large | 9 | 3 | 10 |
Oklahoma State Cowboys | Big 12 Champs | 10 | N/R | 4 |
Missouri Tigers | At-Large | 11 | N/R | 11 |
Northern Illinois Huskies | MAC Champs | 25 | N/R | 12 |
If this ended up being the 2024 College Football Playoff rankings, the CFP seeding would be No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Miami, and No. 4 Oklahoma State. They are projected as the four teams to win their conference championships. All four programs would get a first-round bye.
The next eight teams to get in is interesting. This group includes the most recent upset of Northern Illinois over Notre Dame. With that win, the Huskies are the highest-ranked group of five team, so they get a berth in the College Football Playoff.
First-round matchups are projected to be No. 5 Georgia vs No. 12 Northern Illinois, No. 6 Alabama vs No. 11 Missouri, No. 7 USC vs No. 10 Oregon, and No. 8 Ole Miss vs No. 9 Tennessee.
