Massive 4-star recruit an uphill battle for Illinois football with commitment on horizon

Bret Bielema is trying to match his class of 2026, and a commitment from this four-star recruit would help the cause.

Illinois football wants to continue making splashes in the class of 2027, and we are in the running for a 4-star recruit.

Bret Bielema has been building momentum for the Illini when it comes to the 2027 class. Sitting with the No. 63 class in the country, Illinois has four commitments and is looking to add a big-time recruit in the coming days.

On Saturday, Chad Simmons of Rivals reported that Jaiden Kelly-Murray is down to four programs, and the top four include Wake Forest, Colorado, Virginia Tech, and Illinois.

In addition to the list cut, Kelly-Murray is also ready to make a decision. He will be making a commitment on Monday, May 25. This decision will come before any official visits have been made, so to me, that means a bag was dumped in his lap.

Kelly-Murray would be a big addition to any of the four programs. He is a 5-foot-10, 170-pound wide receiver from Oceanside Collegiate Academy in South Carolina. He is rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 304 player in the class of 2027. Kelly-Murray is also the No. 38 wide receiver in the country and the No. 6 player coming out of South Carolina.

This wouldn’t be the first time Kelly-Murray has made a commitment, though. Back in March, he committed to South Carolina. Less than a month later, he backed away from that decision and opened up his recruitment.

While Illinois is still alive for Kelly-Murray’s commitment, it does seem like this is going to be a tough one to win.

Simmons announced the decision date on Saturday, and he also submitted a prediction on where he believes Kelly-Murray will land. He predicts that Colorado will be the final destination for the talented wide receiver.

Illinois football could always use another weapon like Jaiden Kelly-Murray, but we also have some nice depth at wide receiver

What I believe likely happened is that Colorado has a quarterback in Andre Adams who is committed for 2027. It seems that he has been recruiting others to join him in 2027. On top of that, I believe the Buffaloes probably ended the recruitment with a nice financial agreement.

Could I be wrong? Sure, but it seems that Colorado has all of the momentum with this recruitment right now. If Illinois does win this sweepstakes, Kelly-Murray would be in contention for a starting job in year one. He would be a big part of the offense.

If Illinois doesn’t win this recruitment, we will have plenty of talented pass-catchers who can be major weapons for our future quarterbacks.

As far as young homegrown talent, you have players like Kenyon Alston, Brayden Trimble, Nasir Rankin, Collin Dixon, etc., who will be big-time wide receivers for the program in 2027. Illinois is always active in the transfer portal when it comes to wide receivers, too. This season alone will see Hudson Clement, Ty Robinson, and Alex Perry contribute a ton of snaps.

At the end of the day, I want Kelly-Murray on the roster. With that being said, if Illinois loses out, at least this is a position we have some depth in moving forward. Fingers crossed.
