It seems like every offseason, the Illinois football team manages to add one or two transfer portal players late in the game.
That could easily be the case for the Illini this season, too. Bret Bielema has wrapped up Illinois’ class of 2026, but one name has now emerged as a potential addition to the program for the 2026 campaign.
On Wednesday, Pete Nakos of On3.com reported that Illinois is getting an official visit from Ean Rhea.

Rhea is a 6-foot-2, 235-pound edge who entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer from Emory & Henry of the DII ranks. He is rated as a three-star transfer portal recruit and is ranked as the No. 185 transfer portal edge in the country.
I know that doesn’t sound like good national rankings, but the recruiting attention is what piques my interest. Illinois is getting an official visit from Rhea this weekend. He has already taken official visits to SEC darling Vanderbilt and a program that has a ton of momentum in LSU.
Why the high level recruiting attention for a transfer portal talent that isn’t ranked highly? It is simple.
He’s a monster.
Rhea finished up his 2025 season with 50.0 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 12.0 sacks, and 3.0 forced fumbles.
The Illinois football team has the defense to fit what Ean Rhea does best on the field
If LSU wants Rhea, they can dump a bag on his lap and probably land him. If Rhea wants development and a prime chance at a starting job, Illinois is the right place.
I think the Illini can provide Rhea a great opportunity to fit in from day one. He has a lot of experience playing on a defensive line with three down linemen. Illinois likes to play a lot of nickel-type defense, and Rhea thrives in this setting.
Illinois doesn’t have a ton of great defensive line options either. Do you think Rhea would get a lot of snaps with the Tigers? The answer is no. Illinois would be different. He would have a legitimate chance to come in and start, or at least get a ton of snaps from day one.
