The Illinois football team had a chance to secure a big commitment on Tuesday, and they came through in the clutch.
Bret Bielema’s class of 2027 was kind of plodding along as of late. This group was starting to come together nicely, but the Illini needed a shot in the arm.
On Monday, the news dropped that Bennett Konkey was set to make a decision about his future on Tuesday. He was down to just four programs he would be choosing from, too.
That decision came down on Tuesday afternoon, as Konkey took to social media to announce that he has committed to Illinois.
‼️COMMITTED‼️

As I said, this is a massive commitment for the Orange and Blue. Konkey is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound wide receiver from Geneva High School in Illinois. He is rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 238 player in the class of 2027. Konkey is also the No. 35 wide receiver in the country and the No. 12 player coming out of Illinois.
Illinois winning this recruitment is a pretty big deal. It is not like we were going up against MAC programs.
Northwestern, Iowa, and Iowa State were all in the running for Konkey’s commitment. All three programs have beaten us out in the past, but Illinois didn’t let this four-star playmaker through the cracks.
Illinois football is starting to make some inroads with in-state recruits for the class of 2027
Honestly, it is pretty tough for Illinois to land the top recruits in the state of Illinois. There are bigger programs with deeper pockets that like to come in and pluck the top talent.
With that being said, Bielema is starting to take some of the market share when it comes to in-state recruiting.
Illinois had already secured the commitment of Justin Johnson, a four-star cornerback. He is from Evanston and is the No. 14 player in the state. Mason Halliman isn’t too far behind, as he is a high-three-star recruit and the No. 16 player in the state of Illinois.
And now you have the commitment of Konkey, a four-star wide receiver. He is the No. 12 player in the state of Illinois. So, that gives us three players in the top 16 in the state of Illinois for 2027. That isn’t a bad haul at all.
Beyond those three, Illinois has also secured a commitment from Soren Fifer (No. 24), Sean Rice (No. 44), and Gavin Ericson-Staton (No. 45) for next season. It will be interesting to see if Illinois can make any ground up and maybe secure another in-state commitment or two for 2027.
