The Illinois football team needs some good news right now after missing out on an recruit on Monday.
Bret Bielema was looking to add to the Illini offense with a commitment from wide receiver Don Spillers, but that didn’t end up being the case. Spillers picked in-state Michigan State over the Orange and Blue.
This wasn’t a shocking decision considering Spillers is from Detroit, but it still hurts nonetheless. While that was a recruitment I would have liked Illinois to win, the next big one is one of the biggest decisions yet.
On Monday, Bennett Konkey announced that he will be making a decision on Tuesday, June 16. He will be deciding between Northwestern, Iowa, Iowa State, and Illinois.

This is a massive recruitment for the Illini. Konkey is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound wide receiver from Geneva High School in Illinois. He is rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 238 player in the class of 2027. Konkey is also the No. 35 wide receiver in the country and the No. 12 player coming out of Illinois.
Whoever is going to land Konkey is going to get a game-changer. He is someone who can fly down the field, and his route-running is outstanding. This kid is the complete package, and he is going to make an impact on a team from day one.
Bennett Konkey would help boost the Illinois football class of 2027 to another level
As of right now, the Illinois class of 2027 is okay. We have some good talent at the top with Justin Johnson leading the charge as our only four-star commitment.
In total, out of the nine commitments thus far, four players are ranked inside the top 1000 nationally. That is a number that I would like to see grow if Illinois wants to be competitive in the Big Ten.
Sitting with the No. 60 class in the country, Illinois needs a shot in the arm. Konkey would provide that shot.
If the Illini can land the talented in-state wide receiver, he would give us another four-star commitment. That would surely launch us into the top 50 nationally, and it would also give us another offensive weapon, which we lack greatly in this recruiting class.
I think it is pretty evident that Illinois needs this commitment badly. I like who we have committed right now, but we need more top talent, too. Konkey would go a long way in providing that top talent.
