Illinois football needed a shot in the arm on defense, and they may have found one in new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck.
Hauck, a former head coach of the Montana Grizzlies, was hired by Illinois in February 2026 to take over a defense once led by Aaron Henry. Hauck led the Grizzlies for 14 seasons, recording 151 wins and a .778 winning percentage during his tenure.
The 62-year-old Hauck is going to be a difference-maker for the Illini, as he will try to elevate a defense that experienced a great deal of turnover this offseason. Besides his elite defensive mind, there is one other thing he brought to Champaign that's about to catch fire.

If there's one thing that I know about college football, it is that quotes from coaches can take on a life of their own.
Whether it's Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy screaming "I'm a man! I'm forty," or Montana Tech's Bob Green saying "you think you could take on hell with a squirt gun," there are some quotes that fans just grab on to for one reason or another.

The Illinois football team has an interesting season ahead, with various analysts calling 2026 a rebuild year for Bielema. The program is not projected to have a stellar season, with their betting line for total wins set at 7.5.
The Illini have a lot to play for this season, and Hauck is going to help them get there. His defenses were sensational with Montana, ranking top five in the Big Sky in scoring defense, total defense, and sacks in each of the last eight seasons.
Hauck is an old-school coach whose defense thrives when it comes to turnovers, ranking top-10 in the nation in three of the last five seasons. This system fits perfectly with Illinois' roster, especially with Matthew Bailey and Xavier Scott patrolling the secondary.
Simply put, Hauck can certainly be the change of pace that Illinois' defense needs to put them over the hump. Keep an eye on this unit this season and the creativity that Hauck will bring to Champaign.
