Game one hasn’t even started, and the injury bug is plaguing the Illinois football wide receiver room.
The first tough injury news was about Alex Perry. The transfer portal addition had an injury in the spring that could never get right. He has a nerve that isn’t firing in his shoulder, so he is having surgery, which will end his season.
On Tuesday, Bret Bielema took to the podium to let Illinois fans know that Jayshon Platt is also on the mend.
Bielema didn’t go into detail about the type of injury that Platt has sustained, and he wasn’t sure when the transfer portal addition would be back in action. The one thing Bielema was pretty sure of is that Platt won’t be able to suit up for Illinois in week one.

Having one wide receiver who was going to make an impact on the 2026 season out is one thing, but having two is brutal for the Illini's depth. Thankfully, there are options.
The foundational pieces of the Illinois wide receiver corps are Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement. As long as those two are upright and ready to go, Illinois is going to be dangerous on offense.
Illinois does have some talent behind those two, as well. Ty Robinson is another transfer portal addition from Ball State. The 6-foot-4, sixth-year wide receiver had 11 receptions for 113 yards last season.

Dixon and Clement give me comfort on offense, but it is pretty evident that Illinois will have to lean on players who haven't taken a snap in the college ranks.
Robinson is a fun name to throw around, but he had trouble seeing the field in the MAC. I love the potential of Brayden Trimble to step up into a more prominent role with the program.
Trimble was a highly rated recruit coming into last season, and now he has the runway to really take off and have a big season.
Let’s not sleep on the freshmen making an impact. Illinois had, arguably, one of the greatest freshman wide receiver classes in program history. Nas Rankin and Jacob Eberhart were both four-star recruits, and Kenyon Alston was a top 600 player.
Illinois has the bodies and talent to be good at wide receiver, even with two brutal injuries. We just have to hope that inexperienced becomes experienced. That would enable the unknown to become known quickly.
