Illinois football opened its 2026 campaign on Thursday with a 42-23 win against the UAB Blazers at Gies Memorial Stadium.
The Illini, who began the contest as 27.5-point favorites, struggled mightily on defense in Bobby Hauck's debut as defensive coordinator. Hauck's unit seemed to struggle in his new 3-3-5 scheme, and their tackling was seriously lacking throughout the contest.
On the other side of the ball, transfer quarterback Katin Houser had a great introduction to Champaign. The former East Carolina Pirate had four touchdowns - three passing, one rushing - and the eighth-best passing efficiency in a game in program history at 244.6.

Houser, a product of Anaheim, California, made a statement in his first game with the Illini. The four-star quarterback lived up to the hype coming into the season, going 13-for-17 for 182 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
The gunslinger's massive arm was on full display throughout this game, highlighted by this 34-yard Hail Mary to Ty Robinson that ended the first half with a bang.

Katin Houser lived up to the billing, and will continue to shine throughout the season
Houser is a large pocket passer with a high football IQ and a strong arm that can take the top off a defense at a moment's notice. This is the scouting report that I've heard countless times throughout the offseason, and it certainly came to fruition on Thursday night.
Houser impressed a lot of people in Champaign, as he showed great decisiveness with his throws and the confidence to run the ball when there was nothing open. His power was also on full display, as he put elite zip on the ball whether it was a short, intermediate, or long throw.
To be fair, there were some minor hiccups, but that will be fixed with time. It was the first game of the season. Overall, with the injuries that have been sustained at wide receiver, the performance by Illinois' new quarterback is certainly promising for the rest of the season.
Katin Houser is the real deal, and the Big Ten better be ready for him.
