The NCAA tournament brackets have been revealed, and the path to the national championship is going to be a slog.
While most of the Illini fans were expecting it, the bracket reveal has us as a No. 3 seed. This is the second time in three years that Illinois has been a top-three seed, and the third time in the last six seasons.
Illinois has been past the first weekend of the NCAA tournament one time since 2005. Two seasons ago, the Illini made the Elite 8. Brad Underwood is now going to try to get back to the second weekend, but advancing in this NCAA tournament is going to be tough.
You can’t look past No. 14 Penn. This is a team that has won five straight and nine out of the last 10. Moreover, they are a smart team. Illinois has their lapses in concentration, so the Quakers could give us a scare.
After this massive game, things get real for the Illini. No. 6 North Carolina could be the prize if we can get past Penn.
The Tar Heels have beaten teams like Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio State, Virginia, Duke, and Louisville. That is the resume that a No. 6 seed has, which is insane.
Just getting to the Sweet 16 is going to be a massive challenge for the Illini. If we get past those two rounds, No. 2 Houston could be waiting.
Illinois is familiar with the Cougars, as that is the team that knocked us out of the NCAA tournament in 2021-22.
Houston could have easily been a No. 1 seed, but they are a terrifying No. 2 seed. They have beaten teams like Arkansas, Texas Tech, BYU, and Kansas this season. This is a stout Cougars team that will give Illinois serious problems.
If Illinois can then somehow emerge from the Sweet 16, No. 1 seed Florida is likely the team we will face in the Elite 8.
The Gators have some impressive wins this season. They beat Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Kentucky, and Arkansas.
Win that tough Elite 8 game, and Illinois gets a date with No. 1 Duke, most likely. The Blue Devils have NBA talent up and down the roster, and they have beaten teams like Kansas, Arkansas, Florida, Michigan State, Louisville, Michigan, Clemson, Virginia, and North Carolina this season.
Illinois basketball has the ability to play good enough to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament
I think this might be one of the toughest NCAA tournament roads I have seen. Illinois is going to have to play well to get past the first weekend, let alone go deep in March.
The thing with the Illini is that we have played well enough at times to beat any team in the country.
Let’s not forget that Illinois has beaten some impressive opponents this season. Wins over Texas Tech, Tennessee, Iowa, Purdue, and Nebraska are all on our resume.
It isn’t about whether Illinois can play elite basketball. I know we can. It is about will we? If Illinois can play A- or better, we can go deep. If we play B or worse, this will be a short stint in the postseason.
