Illinois football is a week into the 2026 season, and we have started on the right foot.
Beginning any campaign with a win is a great thing. And we didn’t need the help of the refs, unlike Michigan. Illinois won the game outright against UAB, and now we go to work preparing for a Duke team that has a nasty defense.
The opening betting lines for the game against Duke have been posted. There is some confidence coming from Las Vegas for the Orange and Blue.
Here is the Illinois football vs Duke opening betting lines
Illinois football vs Duke spread – Illinois -6.5
It is a good feeling that Illinois is a 6.5-point favorite to open the week. We didn’t look great in the first half against UAB, but I think this line is more about how Duke looked in week one.
The Blue Devils struggled greatly against Tulane. Walker Eget was not what he was advertised to be, and this enabled the Green Wave to nearly clip Duke.
If I were to bet on this game, I would take Illinois -6.5. I think the Illini defense will have a better game, as the Duke offense isn’t very good. I have full confidence in Katin Houser, too.
Illinois football vs Duke money line – Illinois -230, Duke +190
I don’t think this is a very good bet. The money line for the game on Saturday is -230 in favor of Illinois. You have to bet $100 just to win $43.48 right now. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze.
Duke coming in at +190 isn’t good value either. If they were in the +300 range, then I would say the Blue Devils are worth the gamble, but at +190, I would save my money.
Illinois football vs Duke over/under – 53.5 points
The over/under of 53.5 points is intriguing. You are looking at a Duke offense that struggled to get off the ground going up against an Illinois defense that had issues against UAB.
I think the Illinois defense will be much better in week two. We know where the weaknesses are in the defense, and I imagine the coaching staff will go to work early this week fixing those issues.
Illinois’ offense should be able to put up points. While Duke’s defense has been good under Manny Diaz, the Illini cooked the Blue Devils with current Miami quarterback Dariah Mensah last season. I think we can game plan for a worse quarterback in 2026.
At the end of the day, I think this game goes under 53.5 points. I can see Illinois getting into the 20s, but Duke won’t reach that high.
