The Illinois football program has plenty of work ahead of them in 2026, but the class of 2027 has the future looking extremely bright.
The Illini secured commitments from many talented 2027 recruits, including four-star cornerback Justin Johnson and three-star wide receiver Brody Knowles. On Friday, it was four-star receiver Bennett Konkey who stole the show with this one-handed touchdown for Geneva High School.
Konkey continues to be a key part of Geneva's offense, recording six receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown. His stellar grab gave the Vikings momentum heading into halftime, leading to a 56-49 win over Batavia.

The 6-foot-1 speedster is having a stellar senior year, recording 961 yards and 13 touchdowns through his first six games. Konkey's athleticism and efficiency have been on full display, averaging 20.9 yards per catch on 46 receptions.

The Illini need to rebuild their receiving corps for 2027, with six of their 16 receivers in 2026 being fourth-, fifth-, or sixth-year seniors. Konkey will be the perfect replacement for Illinois' top upperclassmen, as he brings a talent profile that can make him an early contributor in Champaign.
Konkey is the prospect that programs dream of, but may not be able to find. He not only brings the jumping ability that allows him to high point the ball against smaller defenders, but also blazing speed that makes him tough to keep up with.

As the top recruit in Illinois' class of 2027, Konkey is poised to play a pivotal role in the rebuild process for the program. The multi-sport athlete can be an asset for Bielema anywhere on the field, regardless of who is under center next season.
If you do not have Konkey on your radar as a fan, then you need to keep this young man in the back of your mind. This is the future of the Illinois football program, and he's about to take over the Big Ten.
