The future of the Illinois football program is extremely bright, especially with the addition of four-star wideout Bennett Konkey to the class of 2027.

Konkey, who is entering his final season with Geneva High School, is ranked as one of Illinois' top two recruits for next season. He will be a key addition to a program that stands to lose five receivers by season's end.

Illini fans across the country were thrilled when Konkey made his commitment to the program, and are now even more excited for his arrival after the performance he gave in Geneva's season opener.

It was an exciting start to the season for the Geneva Vikings, as they took a commanding lead early against the Libertyville Wildcats behind Konkey's three first quarter touchdowns. He was all over the field, finding the end zone on a 100-yard opening kickoff return, a 70-yard bomb down the middle, and a 49-yard screen pass down the sideline.

Konkey will look to continue his success in Week 2 when Geneva hosts the Oswego Panthers, which is coming off a dominating 44-22 win against the Neuqua Valley Wildcats at home.

Bennett Konkey's blazing fast speed will give Illinois football a ton of upside in 2027

It was a special start to the season for Konkey, as his three first quarter touchdowns accounted for 18 of Geneva's 28 points against Libertyville. He was the biggest catalyst for their success on Friday night and is poised to have a monster year before he heads to Champaign.

Konkey, who is also a track-and-field star, can reportedly run a sub-11.00 100m as well as a 4.43 40-yard dash. He is quick and someone who can certainly take the top off a defense when need be.

In an offense like Illinois', Konkey has all of the tools to succeed, as his experience in both the slot and outside the numbers benefits him greatly in Barry Lunney's scheme. He can become a top pass-catcher for Bret Bielema in the slot, as evidenced by Hank Beatty's success a year ago.

Konkey's commitment is looking better and better by the day, and we are only one week into the 2026 football season. Production like this may not be sustainable throughout an entire season, but don't take your eyes off the future Illini. This young man is about to have a stellar year.
