Bret Bielema using Chicago area football to build foundation at Illinois

The Illinois football program has quality commitments in 2027, and the top of the list is from a key recruiting area.

Recruiting success has been pretty wild for the Illinois football program under Bret Bielema.

I never thought I would see the day when Illini could secure a top-25 freshman class. Bielema managed to pull that off in 2026.

The class of 2027 is looking to be solid. It might not end up in the top 25, but it has some really good pieces who could help the program win games in the future. Some of these pieces are from the key recruiting area of Chicago.

On Wednesday, the Chicago Sun-Times published a list of the top 50 Chicago-area football players for the 2026 season. These are players from Chicago and the suburbs, and it includes all years of high school and all positions.

Illinois is bringing three out of the 50 in from the class of 2027. Not only did Bielema land three of the best Chicago-area recruits, but these three are the highest-rated commitments for the Illini in the 2027 class.

The crème of the crop is Justin Johnson. He is a four-star cornerback who is the No. 218 player in the class of 2027. Wide receiver Bennett Konkey is part of the list, too. He is a four-star and the No. 407 player in the 2027 class.

Rounding out the Illinois players on the list is Mason Halliman. The third-highest-rated recruit for the Illini, Halliman is a three-star and the No. 486 player in the class of 2027.

These three commits are the top of the line when it comes to players for the Illini in 2027. They are foundational pieces to build a strong team. Illinois always needs cornerbacks, wide receivers, and offensive linemen. The fact that we can get them from our own backyard makes it even more special.

Illinois football recruiting classes start slowly but finish strong when the season starts

If I am not mistaken, the Illinois class of 2026 was in a similar position this time last year. I believe I wrote an article or two about how Illinois’ 2026 class could be in trouble unless something big happens in the fall.

Well, egg on my face. Illinois put together one of the best recruiting classes in program history for 2026. That group should help the team immediately.

The class of 2027 has 16 commitments and ranks No. 57 in the country as of writing this article. There is plenty of work left to do. While I might be a slow learner, I do learn. I am not going to doubt Bielema and the Illinois coaching staff. The class of 2027 is lagging right now, but I fully believe they can put together a solid group once again.
