The Illinois football team has finally added another piece to the class of 2027, and it was on the defensive side of the ball.

While the women’s basketball team is starting their push in March, the Illinois football program is making a mark of their own.

In need of more talent for the class of 2027, Bret Bielema came through for the Illini with another four-star recruit.

Allen Trieu of On3.com reported that Illinois has landed a commitment from Justin Johnson. This is a huge commitment for the Orange and Blue and one that will help solidify the defense in the future.

Johnson is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound athlete from Evanston Township High School in Illinois. He is rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 349 player in the class of 2027. He is also the No. 20 athlete in the country and the No. 12 player coming out of Illinois.

Numerous programs were vying for Johnson’s commitment. He had offers from teams like Cincinnati, Iowa, and Michigan State, among others. But Illinois ended up winning out. While he is listed as an athlete, it looks like Johnson will enter the college ranks as a cornerback.

Illinois football is making a strong push for some great defensive talent for 2027

It is tough to tell who will be on the Illinois roster when 2027 rolls around. We have talent on the team right now, but most of that talent will have departed by then.

Illinois’ defensive depth chart will have plenty of opportunities for playing time. Johnson will have his chance to shine brightly, but he isn’t the only defensive back the Illini are targeting for the class of 2027.

While Johnson is committed, the Illini have some big official visits coming up in a few months. In April, we have safeties Jake Theis and Jabarri Lofton coming to Champaign. Both are top 800 recruits. Trezavant Boyd, a cornerback, will then take his visit in June. He is a top 700 recruit.

The Illini are trying to load up on defensive back talent. We need to build depth. The commitment from Johnson was huge for the program, as he is a building block for the future.
