Illinois has seen more success than usual in recent years with back-to-back nine-win-plus seasons under Bret Bielema. Now, the Illini have started 2-3, but Bielema isn't planning to hit that panic button just yet. Instead, he is staying calm, cool, and collected, knowing he has been in this position before.
"The good news is I've been in this moment before. It's actually one that I really, unfortunately, don't enjoy the process to get there, but I enjoy the moment when I'm in it," Bielema said.

"I've been doing this a long time. Things that happened here through the first five games are things that I'm aware of. I'm going to do everything I can to correct them.

"There isn't going to be anything that I'm going to change or do differently going into week six that I've done in the first five weeks or in the last 17 years," Bielema said. "It's just taking advantage of the moment, realize the pieces you're working with, and make the best of that moment."
Being 2-3 is sadly not an unfamiliar feeling for Illinois football given the history of this program. There was hope that those days were further behind the Illini than they are now, but the Illinois head coach is ready for the process of getting back to success.
When Bielema took over at Illinois, it was not like it was sunshine and rainbows in Champaign. Illinois was not a very successful program when Bielema arrived, and it took time, but he was able to get the Illini in a position to win consistently. Now, we are just five weeks into the season, but a loss to Purdue is not a real confidence builder for this team.
Illinois has the pieces of a great football team and just has to put it together
This Illinois team is full of talented players both on the offense and defense. The defense hasn't looked good through the first five weeks of the season, but with Bobby Hauck stepping down after the Ohio State game, there is hope that, with the talent on that side of the ball, it should hopefully improve.
Offensively, Illinois has everything it needs; injuries have just been an issue. It was a surprise to see the offense struggle so much against a Purdue defense that is one of the worst in the Big Ten, but quarterback Katin Houser and Collin Dixon have proved to have a dynamic connection that carries this offense.
With the line getting healthier and the rest of the group coming together, the offense should bounce back against a Michigan State team that has really struggled this season. All in all, Illinois has everything it needs to be a good team. I mean, on paper, this team is easily 4-1 and not 2-3, but it just hasn't clicked yet on the field.
Bielema isn't going to panic, though, and make a bunch of huge changes. There are still seven games left this season, and while it won't be easy, Illinois can turn things around because once things start clicking for this team, they could be dangerous.
