It was a rough homecoming for the Illinois faithful on Saturday, as the football program allowed the Purdue Boilermakers to reclaim The Cannon.

The Illini, who were 10-point favorites on Saturday, struggled in all three phases of the game at Gies Memorial Stadium. It was a dismal display by Bret Bielema's group, leading to Purdue winning their first Big Ten matchup since defeating Indiana on November 25, 2023.

There were a lot of questions coming into this game, especially on defense. Inside linebackers coach Roger Cooper was elevated to defensive playcaller after Bobby Hauck's resignation, but the defense still struggled to tackle while giving up 345 yards to the No. 59 offense in the country.

The offense, on the other hand, was completely off their game on Saturday. Katin Houser struggled to create any positive momentum in the first half, recording only 45 yards and a touchdown. He didn't look like himself until the final two minutes of the game, when Illinois scored 10 of their 17 points.

Illinois' remaining schedule looks rather bleak after Saturday's brutal loss to Purdue

This was a game that Illinois desperately needed, especially after everything had been through to start the season. They have now lost three of their first five games, and it's hard to remain positive when looking at their remaining schedule.

As of writing this, Illinois will face three ranked opponents in their final seven games: No. 13 Oregon, No. 21 UCLA, and No. 20 Iowa. They will also face the Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-0) on November 6 and an improving Northwestern squad that beat Penn State 34-13 on Friday.

This is a tough schedule for a team whose headline win is against UAB in the first week of the season. The defense has still not found its identity, and the offense has taken a step back from week four to week five.

There is plenty of work to be done, and it's not like Bielema won't modify his game plan down the road. But after what we saw against Purdue, it makes sense that Illinois fans feel down in the dumps to start October.
