When Brayden Trimble enrolled early at Illinois back in the spring of 2025, he probably hoped it would help him develop into a great weapon for Illinois. Now, in the fall of 2026, Trimble could be the savior that the Illini need after an injury to FAU transfer Jayshon Platt.
On Tuesday, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema shared with the media that Platt sustained an injury, and his timetable for return was unknown. It could be a few weeks, it could be a month, but on the bright side, the injury was not as bad as it was initially feared to be. While Bielema didn't share what the injury was, he did share who he believes will be able to step up in Platt's spot.
Honestly, it was an easy answer: Brayden Trimble.
"Even though he is a second-year freshman in the building, his understanding, ability, desire - he kind of plays with an attitude," Bielema said. "He's a kid I have to calm down a bit here and there. He definitely plays with a chip on his shoulder."

Anytime there is an injury to a starter, it is a great opportunity for young talent to step up, and Illinois is flooded with that this season. The news of Platt's injury is heartbreaking, especially with the hype he has received in fall camp, but Trimble has received a lot of hype as well, and now he gets to showcase what he has worked on since joining the Illini.
Like Bielema said, Trimble enrolled early as a freshman in the spring of 2025, and in doing so, it has really helped his development. Bielema said the improvement from Trimble has been tremendous, and he even has that fire that oftentimes can be seen in the Illinois head coach on the sideline.
Having a player that you have to pull back sometimes is not the worst thing; it shows fire and intensity for playing the game. Trimble has that intensity, and Bielema isn't the only one to see it; so do the rest of his teammates.
Veteran wide receiver Collin Dixon, who many see as the leader of this wide receiver room, has loved what Trimble has shown in the last year and a half since arriving in Champaign. Now, Trimble will be able to showcase all that work on the field.
Trimble was already expected to be in the rotation at the slot position with Platt, but now he will most likely slide right into the starting role. His speed and ability to break away from his defender are huge, especially with a quarterback like Katin Houser, who can get the ball downfield.
This is an opportunity for Trimble to earn snaps throughout the entire season, and not just while Platt is out. Hopefully, Platt can return soon, but the excitement about Trimble's progress makes this an interesting story of how he will develop throughout the season.
