Illinois football continues to do work in the Lone Star State when it comes to recruiting.

The state of Texas is one of the strongest pipelines for the Illinois coaching staff. Wide receivers coach Andrew Hayes-Stoker has been the main man on the job, and he has done amazing work plucking some of the most talented recruits out of the state. The Illini are now one step closer to landing another big-time recruit out of, arguably, the most talent-rich state in the country.

Savion Williams decided to cut his list down to just eight teams on Sunday afternoon. The eight teams on his list include TCU, Arkansas, Memphis, Baylor, Kansas, SMU, Kansas State and Illinois. All of these programs are solid and will be tough to beat for his commitment.

Williams is a 6-foot-4, 195-pound wide receiver from Marshall High School in Marshall, Texas. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 637 player in the class of 2020 and the No. 117 wide receiver in the nation. He is also the No. 89 player in the state of Texas as well.

The recruiting attention has really heated up for Williams over the last few months. The majority of teams on his list just offered him this year. I will be interested to see what route he ends up going with his commitment and if Illinois can snag this big-time playmaker.

When Illinois offered Williams back in February, I wrote an article about him and how he could improve this Illini roster. I still feel the same way today. This kid has everything I want in a wide receiver. His size at 6-foot-4, 195-pounds is optimal when it comes to a big man on the outside. I love his ability to be a red zone target for the Illini quarterbacks. His ability to go up and get the ball is a great asset as well.

I am excited that Illinois made Williams’ top eight. I believe we have a legit shot at landing this kid because of how well we recruit the state of Texas. He would be a great addition to this team and someone who can make an impact day one.
