Illinois Football: Illini commit Camilo Eifler will fill huge need in 2019
It has been about three days, but the commitment rush the Illinois football team received this past Monday still hasn’t worn off yet.
One of the two big commitments was from wide receiver Fabian McCray. He is a three-star recruit who is the No. 943 player in the class of 2019 and the No. 18 player in the state of Illinois. McCray has been one of the main targets for a while now.
The other big commitment was from Camilo Eifler. He is a transfer from the Washington Huskies who picked the Illini to finish out his college career. This was a huge pickup for the Illini because of what he can bring to the table.
Coming out of Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, California, Eifler was a 6-foot-1.25, 215-pound outside linebacker. He was rated as a four-star recruit who was the No. 142 player in the class of 2016 and the No. 11 outside linebacker in the nation.
Illinois actually recruited Eifler when he was entering the college ranks as well. But, he ended up staying on the west coast and picking the Huskies.
In year one with Washington, Eifler was redshirted. He was then able to play in five games as a redshirt freshman. He ended the 2017 campaign with six total tackles. He is now coming into the Illinois football program. He will have to sit out this upcoming season but will still have two years of eligibility when he starts playing in 2019.
Illinois is going to need Eifler when 2019 rolls around as well. As of right now, I am not overly confident about the linebacker core. Although, I think Del’Shawn Phillips could have an All-Big Ten type of season. But, he will depart after this season because he is a senior.
I could see Eifler coming in and filling in for Phillips immediately. He has the talent to be a starting Big Ten linebacker from day one. Having him come in and play right away will be huge for the program.
Next: Projected Illini starting lineup with Adonis De La Rosa
Illinois snagged a talented linebacker in Eifler on Monday. This pickup was massive for the program and will benefit the team starting in 2019. I am impressed with the closing ability of Lovie Smith and Hardy Nickerson.
