Illinois Basketball: 2020 big man Cliff Omoruyi gets offer from Illini
The Illinois basketball team made a move on Friday night that would benefit the team greatly down the road.
The Illini extended an offer to Clifford Omoruyi. He is a 6-foot-11, 220-pound big man from Roselle Catholic High School in Roselle, New Jersey. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 115 player in the class of 2020 and the No. 13 center in the nation.
Illinois offering Omoruyi a scholarship was a good move. He is someone who would improve the team at the No. 5 spot. His scholarship total continues to rise, though. He now has roughly six offers with the most recent being from Illinois and Florida. He will continue to rack up offers in the coming year as well.
Omoruyi transferred from Queen of Peace High School to Roselle Catholic this past year. The reason that program sounds so familiar is that big-time Illini target Kahlil Whitney attends Roselle Catholic. He is the main target for the class of 2019. Getting him would probably help in the recruitment of Omoruyi as well.
Illinois needs more talent at the No. 5, as previously mentioned. With the departures of players like Matic Vesel and Greg Eboigbodin, Illinois is looking for some size. There is also the possibility of Samba Kane not enrolling as well. Reports came out earlier this week saying he has left the team for the summer. That is always a situation to keep updated on.
With that being said, Illinois doesn’t have much if anything at the No. 5 spot. They need some type of size just in case they go up against a bigger team. Getting someone like Omoruyi would be good for the program. He doesn’t just have size, but he is also extremely athletic and can run the floor. He isn’t your typical big man and that is huge.
Next: Projected Illini starting lineup without Greg Eboigbodin
I like this offer by the Illini. If they can prove they can win some games this year, hopefully, that will make it easier to land talented centers like Omoruyi.
