Illinois basketball put multiple players into the NBA Draft, and now they are taking the court in the NBA Summer League.

Kasparas Jakucionis was the first Illini selected back in June. He went No. 20 overall to the Miami Heat and has already suited up in a couple of summer league games.

Following Jakucionis was Will Riley. He didn’t have to wait long, as the Utah Jazz picked Riley with pick No. 21 and traded him to the Washington Wizards.

Riley isn’t participating in the early California and Salt Lake City Summer Leagues, but the Wizards are set to take the court in the main Las Vegas Summer League. That will start on July 10.

Will Riley Summer League schedule with the Washington Wizards

  • Game 1 – Washington Wizards vs Phoenix Suns – 9:00 p.m. ET; Friday, July 11 (ESPN)
  • Game 2 – Brooklyn Nets vs Washington Wizards – 8:00 p.m. ET; Sunday, July 13 (ESPN 2)
  • Game 3 – Philadelphia 76ers vs Washington Wizards – 8:30 p.m. ET; Tuesday, July 15 (NBA TV)
  • Game 4 – Washington Wizards vs Utah Jazz – 10:00 p.m. ET; Wednesday, July 16 (ESPN)

It will be interesting to see if Riley can change the fortunes of the Wizards. This franchise has been a dumpster fire for much of my life, and that hasn’t changed lately. They have won a total of 33 games in the last two seasons combined.

What is exciting is that Riley has the opportunity to be the face of an NBA franchise. There isn’t established talent in Washington, so he can come in and light the world on fire. He will have to start the tear in the Summer League, though.

Riley isn’t playing with a ton of big names in the Summer League either. He will be running with Washington’s top pick from last year, Alex Sarr. But make no mistake about it, Riley has a clear runway to be great for this struggling franchise.
