The Illinois basketball team is preparing for an epic showdown against the Houston Cougars in the Sweet 16.
This will be the first meeting between these two teams since the 2022 NCAA tournament, when the Cougars took down the Illini by a score of 68-53. It was a disappointing end to an otherwise impressive season, but now Illinois will have a chance to get their revenge.
It will be a battle for the ages this Thursday night, with the top offense in the country battling it out with a proverbial defensive powerhouse. However, while the team is battling it out this March, the recruiting scene has exploded with a mid-major talent that could fit very well into Brad Underwood's system.

Andrija Bukumirović, a junior from Sjenica, Serbia, recently announced that he will be entering the transfer portal after spending two seasons with the UT Martin Skyhawks. The second-year forward took a gigantic leap in his progression from year one to year two, averaging 13.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this past season.
Andrija Bukumirović would provide stability for Illinois basketball during an uncertain time
The Illini are going to have some questions to answer when the offseason rolls around. There is a possibility that they're going to have a large turnover on their roster, highlighted by Kylan Boswell's graduation and Keaton Wagler possibly declaring for the NBA Draft.
This might get out of hand for Underwood and his staff, which is why signing Bukumirović makes so much sense right now. He fits the mold that Underwood has set up already with going after foreign players, and he has proved to be a dynamic scorer who has the ability to create shots on a whim from all three levels.
This is obviously just the official start of the transfer portal, so there's going to be a lot of other choices that Illinois could choose from. But with the intensity and fire that Bukumirović has brought to the floor, especially in his game against Florida State, where he recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds, it would be rather criminal for Illinois not to have him on their watch list.
