The U.S. Open is again proving Illinois is a golf school at its heart

It is fun to root for the basketball and football programs, but let's not kid ourselves, Illinois is and always will be a golf school.

The weekend is upon us at the 126th U.S. Open Championship, and once again, Illinois golf will be playing on the weekend.

With the recent trend of the football and basketball programs being successful, the notion that the Illini are a golf school has kind of dwindled away. While the national championship still eludes the Orange and Blue, success at the next level is still going strong.

The U.S. Open is through two rounds with Wyndham Clark holding a four-stroke lead heading into the weekend at -7. As of right now, only 10 players are under par through the first 36 holes.

Former Illinois golfer Adrien Dumont de Chassart is not one of those golfers in the red numbers. That doesn’t mean he is out of the tournament, though. Dumont de Chassart has been consistent, shooting a one-over 71 each of the first two days.

This +2 score through 36 holes has him sitting in a tie for 34th right now, easily within the +4 cut that has been finalized.

What Dumont de Chassart has done well is avoid the big number. He has taken his medicine and managed to reduce his bad holes to just bogies. He has yet to have anything worse than a bogey through the first two rounds, and that is why he is playing the weekend.

Dumont de Chassart wasn’t the only Illini player playing in the U.S. Open this year. Nick Hardy was also in the field, but much like the majority of players, he struggled. Hardy finished his tournament at +12.

With Dumont de Chassart making the cut this year, Illinois continues the streak of cuts made at the U.S. Open.

Thomas Detry made the cut in 2025, Detry and Brian Campbell made the cut in 2024, Hardy made the cut in 2023, and Hardy and Thomas Pieters made the cut in 2022.

The cut the Dumont de Chassart made on Friday gives the Orange and Blue five straight years of someone playing on the weekend.

Stay excited about the basketball and football programs, but don’t sleep on former Illinois doing well at the next level. After all, this is a golf school at its heart.
