Illinois golf has had a great run over the past couple of decades, and some of the talent is currently playing in one of the biggest tournaments of the year.
The Masters Tournament is currently being held at Augusta National. Through round one, Justin Rose has a three-shot lead at -7 over three chasers in Corey Conners, Scottie Scheffler, and Ludvig Aberg.
While the Illini don't have one of the close chasers, we do have a player who is well on pace to make the cut at the 89th Masters Tournament.
From 2011 through 2015, Brian Campbell played for the Orange and Blue. He was a second-team All-American in 2014 and was the Big Ten Player of the Year. A decade later, he is now competing in The Masters Tournament and is in a good position.
Through round one, Campbell is even par and sitting in a tie for 27th place. He was consistent on the day, going out and coming in at 36.
A key to Augusta National is taking advantage of the getable par fives. Campbell was -2 on the four par fives, birding No. 2 and then taking on Amen Corner and birding the dogleg left No. 12.
Brian Campbell looks to be Illinois golf’s only hope to make the cut at The Masters Tournament
Campbell’s even-par first round has him in a great position to see the weekend. The top 50 and ties make the cut, and right now, that number is +1. I would assume we are looking at a cut of around +3 or +4, depending on the weather on Friday.
Illinois also has Thomas Detry in the tournament. He has been a main staple on the PGA Tour, but Detry struggled in the first round. He shot an opening round of +7, 79. Detry is going to need an insane second round to make the cut.
