Illinois basketball started the weekend off right with a massive commitment that helps boost the class of 2026.
Adding a player like Lucas Morillo is huge for the Illini. This kid is a great guard who can play multiple roles on the court. Brad Underwood is always in need of someone who can command an offense, and the future is set up well with this kid in the fold.
With the addition of a new player comes adjustments to what Illinois fans will see in the future when it comes to the roster.
Here is the projected Illinois basketball lineup with the commitment of Lucas Morillo
No. 1 Guard
- Starter: Mihailo Petrovic (?)
While there are still question marks surrounding when Mihailo Petrovic will play for the Illinois basketball program, there is a chance he suits up for us next year, too. The year of eligibility for the experienced guard is up in the air, and that is why there is a question mark next to his name.
Regardless, if he is cleared by the NCAA, I think Petrovic could be Illinois’ starting point guard in 2026-27. He is going to be a huge asset to the program this season when cleared, and if he doesn’t gain enough attention for the NBA, Illinois is set at the No. 1 guard spot in the future.
- Backup: Lucas Morillo (FR)
This is where you will find the man of the hour. Lucas Morillo committed to Illinois on Friday afternoon, and I believe he would enter the program as a primary backup at the point guard role.
Morillo’s specialty is driving the ball. He can get into the paint and finish around the rim. I love his ability to deliver on time and accurate passes as well. Morillo would get plenty of playing time as a freshman, and I think learning behind Petrovic for a season would be ideal.
