The transfer portal craze is happening, and the Illinois basketball team seems to be squarely in the mix for some big-time players.

There is so much going on in the rumor mill right now. The Illini have fingerprints on so many star transfer portal players, and there are quite a few who would help us win games in 2024-25.

While there are plenty of options out there, there are a few who stick out in recent weeks.

Here are the top five transfer portal players Illinois basketball is targeting

1. AJ Storr – Wisconsin Badgers

I mean, the obvious big fish who is still left in the pond is AJ Storr. No one really knows what this kid is going to do, and there are rumors it is a bidding war at this point.

But Storr is a big-time player. At 6-foot-7, 205 pounds, he has the ability to play multiple positions on the court. You can’t ignore the numbers he put up as a sophomore as well.

The Rockford, Illinois, native averaged 16.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game last season. His shooting metrics aren’t great at 43.4% from the field, 32.0% from three-point range, and 81.2% from the free throw line, but I imagine those numbers will increase as he gets a sounder game.

I enjoyed watching Storr play this past season. You can tell he has star blood in him. He is someone who wants to meet the moment and doesn’t let it overcome him.

While Illinois is projected to land Storr, according to 247Sports, there is a long way to go in this recruitment. He has declared for the NBA Draft and entered into the transfer portal. There likely won’t be an answer for a while.

If Illinois does land Storr, he would be an instant starter. I would move Luke Goode over to the starting No. 2 spot and have Storr at the No. 3 wing role if Marcus Domask doesn’t get the waiver they have applied for. If Domask gets the waiver, I have Domask at the No. 2 and Storr at the No. 3 with Goode being Domask’s primary backup and Jake Davis as Storr’s primary backup.
