No. 6 Doug Altenberger
It is tough to calculate the older players when the three-point game was completely different. I think you have to put Doug Altenberger up in the top 10 with what he did in his one season of the three-pointer being recorded.
Since the three-point line was officially introduced in April 1986, Altenberger only got one season with recorded three-point attempts. It was a great season, though.
In 1986-87, Altenberger attempted 5.3 three-point attempts per game. Just think about that for a second. The three-point line was just introduced to the college game, and Altenberger took it head-on.
Altenberger shot one of the best three-point percentages in Illinois history that season as well. He was able to knock down his 5.3 three-point attempts at a clip of 47.5%. His 47.5% ranks No. 3 out of the 102 players who have attempted at least 3.0 three-point attempts per game in a season.
On top of those great numbers, Altenberger has the second-best three-point shooting percentage in a season among players who have attempted at least 5.0 three-point attempts.
I would have loved to have seen the numbers Altenberger would have put up if the three-point line had been introduced earlier in his career. Who knows where he would have ended up on this list if he had a chance to shoot more? For now, Altenberger checks in as the No. 6 Illinois three-point shooter of all time.
