Illinois football favored to land another Newton for the class of 2025
It is a big weekend for the Illinois football program, as there are numerous players taking official visits.
This is a weekend that will help shape the class of 2025 for the Illini. We have nine commitments right now, and building on this group will only help the program in the future.
One of the huge recruiting targets who is on an official visit right now is Jershaun Newton. He is the brother of Jervon, Jerquan, and Jerjuan. Oh yeah, he is also the brother of former Illinois football legend, Jer’Zhan.
Newton is a 6-foot, 205-pound athlete from Clearwater Central Catholic High School in Florida. He is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 654 player in the class of 2025. He is also the No. 51 athlete in the country and the No. 88 player coming out of Florida.
Currently, Newton is on an official visit to Illinois. He is checking out the campus, and what the Illinois football team has to offer. On Thursday, the Illini seemed to gain some serious momentum in the Newton sweepstakes as well.
Jeremy Werner of 247Sports submitted a Crystal Ball Prediction for Newton. He has Illinois landing the talented athlete with a confidence of seven out of 10.
Jershaun Newton seems to be trending toward the defensive side of the ball with the Illinois football program
Jer’Zhan was a great defensive lineman for the Orange and Blue. He was an All-American and someone who is going to have a great NFL career. It looks like Jershaun might be playing on that side of the ball as well.
While Newton is a talented quarterback for Clearwater Central Catholic, I believe he is being recruited as a safety or linebacker for the Illini. The main recruiter for Newton is Illinois defensive coordinator, Aaron Henry, as well.
Versatility is always a great trait in a recruit. Illinois wants to add a player like Newton who can play multiple positions. I think it is extremely valuable that Newton knows the quarterback position while also playing on the defensive side of the ball. That will help him greatly at the college level.
Hopefully, this ends up being a great weekend for the Illinois football team. Bringing another Newton into the mix would be fun. I think this kid has a ton of talent waiting to, potentially, be an All-American.
