The season is less than a week over, and already the Illinois basketball team has landed a big-time player out of the transfer portal.

The transfer portal has really started to heat up for the Illinois basketball program, as we just landed our first transfer of the offseason.

Just hours ago, I put together a projected Illini lineup for the 2024-25 season. That is now going to change. Illinois has landed a big-time three-point threat for the upcoming campaign.

On Monday, Joe Tipton of On3.com reported that Jake Davis has exited the transfer portal and has committed to Illinois.

Davis is a 6-foot-6, 220-pound wing from McCordsville, Indiana. Coming out of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Davis wasn’t highly recruited for the class of 2023. He picked Mercer as his landing spot.

Illinois basketball is getting a scorer who can shoot with the addition of transfer portal wing Jake Davis

Illinois is getting Davis, who just finished up his freshman season. He has three years of eligibility left, and now he is headed to the big leagues with the Illini.

In his lone season with the Bears, Davis played in 33 games and averaged 9.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He also shot 41.9% from the field and 84.8% from the free throw line.

The thing that I love the most about the addition of Davis is his three-point shooting. He attempted 155 three-point shots this past season, which is 4.7 three-pointers per game, and hit them at a clip of 38.7%. That is a huge sample size and a great number for Illinois to add to the roster.

I see Davis being a legitimate starting threat for Illinois next season. With that type of shooting, he is going to compete and might win one of the starting spots. Illinois also potentially has Marcus Domask and Luke Goode coming back in 2024-25. That would give us three great shooters of the basketball.

This is a huge addition to the Illinois basketball program. I have expressed that we needed more shooting, and Davis brings that to the team. Great job by Brad Underwood and the Illinois coaching staff.
