Illinois basketball has a huge transfer portal official visit taking place
Illinois basketball has a big transfer portal frontcourt talent coming to Champaign for a visit.
As the transfer portal stands right now, the Illini have had four transfers out of the program and four transfers in. The most recent transfer portal commitment came in the form of Carey Booth.
Booth is going to play in the frontcourt for Illinois, as we needed some help after the departure of Amani Hansberry. I have Booth coming in and getting a lot of minutes as the primary backup at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.
The lack of depth in the frontcourt is currently an issue for the Illini. Brad Underwood and the Illinois coaching staff see this and have been targeting players in the transfer portal. One of the top targets right now is Ben Humrichous.
Coming out of Tipton High School in Indiana, Humrichous wasn’t highly recruited. He had a couple of scholarship offers but ended up picking NAIA Huntington University as his landing spot. He spent a few seasons with the Foresters before transferring to Evansville last year.
With the Aces, Humrichous started 24 games in 2023-24 and averaged 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. Humrichous then entered the transfer portal.
Over the last few days, momentum started to build for Illinois to get Humrichous into the program. Numerous outlets are reporting that the 6-foot-9 forward is actually taking an official visit to Illinois on Thursday.
Landing Ben Humrichous out of the transfer portal would give Illinois basketball a dangerous scoring option
Humrichous’ journey in the game of basketball is fascinating. There is talent at all levels of basketball, and he has proved you can start out at a level like NAIA and build into a great player.
Illinois could use a player like Humrichous on the roster next season too. As mentioned earlier, we need frontcourt help, and he can provide great depth. I have him being the primary backup at the No. 4 spot and getting 20 or more minutes per game.
I love the fact that Humrichous can stretch the floor. While he has great size, Humrichous can shoot the ball. He took 5.3 three-point attempts last season and hit them at a clip of 41.4%. That is a great number and one the Illini could use in the second unit.
The visit on Thursday is huge for the Illini. Landing Humrichous would give us a great scoring option in the frontcourt.
