Illinois basketball all-time record against current SEC programs

The SEC isn't nearly the thorn in the side of fans on the basketball side of things, so I wanted to see how the Illinois basketball program has done against SEC teams.

Illinois basketball vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

  • 2-1 overall

It has been nearly 50 years since Illinois has played South Carolina, but in the three matchups between the two teams, the Illini have gotten the better of the Gamecocks 2-1.

The last matchup between South Carolina and Illinois came in 1978. Illinois welcomed the Gamecocks to Assembly Hall and sent them packing with a 64-57 win.

That win over South Carolina marked back-to-back victories for the Illini in the series. In the two wins, Illinois averaged beating the Gamecocks by 11.5 points per game.

Illinois basketball vs. Tennessee Volunteers

  • 1-3 overall

One of the few teams Illinois has struggled against in the SEC is the Tennessee Volunteers. They are one of the most recent SEC teams to take on the Illini as well.

Illinois is just 1-3 all-time against Tennessee. This includes the most recent game, which was last season. It was a good contest, but the Volunteers got the better of the Illini, winning the game 86-79.

Previously, Illinois had beaten the Volunteers in 1988. This was the only game between the team teams played at Illinois. The other three matchups were the Illini going on the road.

Illinois basketball vs. Texas A&M Aggies

  • 3-0 overall

Illinois gets back on the horse with the Texas A&M series. We have been dominant against the Aggies, going 3-0 in the three matchups all time.

Much like a lot of the SEC programs, the two teams haven’t played in a long time. The last matchup was back in 1982. Illinois played Texas A&M up in Anchorage, Alaska, and took down the Aggies 72-70.

Illinois has been pretty consistent in this series too. We have scored between 71 and 76 points in all three matchups. Our defense has been stout as well, giving up just 63.3 points per game.
