A haunted house will provide more safety to the Illinois basketball team than College Park, Maryland.
Since joining the Big Ten, it seems as if Maryland has found new ways to beat the Illini, as we have now lost five in a row.
Illinois basketball has hit a rough streak against Maryland in College Park
- March 3rd, 2016 - Maryland 81, Illinois 55
Maverick Morgan had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 10-of-13 from the floor however, the rest of the team shot 12-of-44. Malcolm Hill was averaging 18 points but only scored 10 points in this game.
The Terrapins went 14-of-25 from behind the arc. Melo Trimble and Jake Layman both scored 18 points.
- December 27, 2016 - Maryland 84, Illinois 59
Malcolm Hill surpassed 1,500 points and Efrem Winters (1,487) for 11th place on the Illinois all-time scoring list. Hill scored 21 points in the game. I have nothing else.
Maryland shot 55.9% for the game. Trimble scored 20 points and Jaylen Brantley scored 13 points. The Illini was down by 16 at halftime, and we've already gone over the final score.
- December 7th, 2019 - Maryland 59, Illinois 58
This one hurt because Illinois was up by 14 points at halftime. Anthony Cowan scored 20 points including a dagger three-pointer that gave Maryland the lead 58 -57.
Cowan also had the game-winning play when he picked Andres Feliz's pocket, got fouled, and split the one-and-one that produced the final score.
Trent Frazier scored 13 points. Feliz scored 11 and the defense held Maryland to 33.3% shooting.
- January 21, 2022 - Maryland 81, Illinois 65
Maryland didn't do anything good to win the game, but Illinois didn't do anything to lose the game. Kofi Cockburn was in concussion protocol, and Maryland took advantage of it.
Donta Scott finished with a career-high 24 points. Maryland outrebounded Illinois 33 - 30 and had 11 second-chance points. Maryland held Illinois to 31% from three-point range and 39% from the field.
Alfonso Plummer finished with 18 points, Jacob Grandison 14 points, and Frazier 14 points without Kofi. Illinois shot 80% from the free throw line.
- December 2nd, 2022 - Maryland 71, Illinois 66
This was a hump game because once Maryland took the lead early in the first half, they never gave it back. Maryland shot 50% in the first half. This was last year's your turn my turn team.
When Coleman Hawkins had his turn, he scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. When Terrance Shannon Jr. took his turn he had 19 points and seven rebounds. Matthew Mayer only scored two points when it was his turn, but RJ Melendez had one of his best games last year, adding 13 points and seven rebounds.
Illinois only attempted eight free throws while Maryland shot 18 attempts.
That's two blowouts, a hump game, a missing best player game, and a dagger comeback and rip your heart out of your body game. The Illini just don't play well in College Park.
