Game-by-game prediction for the Illinois football 2024 season
Game 3: Illinois Football vs. Central Michigan Chippewas (Win – 48-13)
Illinois is going to need a nice get-right game after the loss to Kansas. The Central Michigan Chippewas is the perfect solution.
Pros
Central Michigan was not a good team in 2023. They finished 5-7 overall but only played two power-four programs. They lost to Michigan State 31-7 and Notre Dame 41-17.
I think Kaden Feagin could have a field day against the Chippewas. They ranked No. 99 in the country in rush defense, and they gave up 4.7 yards per carry, which ranked No. 100 in the nation. Feagin is ready to have a breakout year as a starter, and he was able to average 4.6 yards per carry as a freshman.
Let’s not forget that Luke Altmyer can also run the ball at quarterback. He rushed for 282 yards last season.
Illinois’ defense could have a good day too. Bert Emanuel Jr. should start at quarterback for Central Michigan. He isn’t a throwing threat, as he had 286 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions last season. His best attribute is running the football, but I think Illinois’ front seven can shut that down quickly. We have smart edge linebackers who can keep contain.
Cons
I don’t really see a ton of cons in this game. Central Michigan’s running game could make an impact. Marion Lukes is back at running back, and he rushed for 737 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry in 2023.
Final
The only con for Illinois against Central Michigan should be neutralized. Illinois has the offensive firepower to put up a lot of points, so the Chippewas won’t be able to run the ball often as they try to play catch-up.
I like the matchup for Illinois defensively, and the Illini offense should see daylight all game long. Feagin will bust off big runs, and Altmyer should be able to pull the defense in with the run and then hit Pat Bryant or someone else over the top.
