Shooting is always a valuable asset, and the Illinois basketball team is looking to add an ace three-point shooter for 2025.

The class of 2025 recruitment has really picked up in recent weeks. The Illini have already landed our point guard of the future with the commitment of Jeremiah Fears. The Joliet, Illinois, native is looking to make a name for himself in Champaign, but he will need some running mates.

Illinois has been rumored in the mix for numerous recruits for 2025. There are a few who have already scheduled official visits as well. Ricardo “RJ” Greer Jr. is a talented player who is looking to set up a visit to Champaign.

According to Dushawn London of 247Sports, Greer is scheduled to take an official visit to North Carolina State June 6-8. In the post by London on social media, he also mentions that Greer is setting up a visit to Illinois as well.

Greer is a 6-foot-4, 170-pound shooting guard from Archbishop Alter High School in Ohio. He is rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 102 player in the class of 2025. He is also the No. 15 shooting guard in the country and the No. 3 player coming out of Ohio.

As of right now, 247Sports has Cincinnati, Penn State, and North Carolina State as the leaders with a “warm” tag. That doesn’t mean much if he is looking for an official visit to Illinois, though. It seems that his recruitment is still pretty open.

Illinois basketball needs a sharpshooting guard like RJ Greer Jr. to pair with Jeremiah Fears in the class of 2025

It is great that Illinois is getting in the mix for a player like Greer. He isn’t rated as one of the top echelon players in the college game, but my eyes and his numbers say otherwise.

When I watch Greer play the game of basketball, I smile. The movement on the court makes me happy. There are too many players in today’s game who just wait for the ball to come to them. Greer moves incredibly well without the ball, and this helps space the floor and creates open looks.

You better not go under screens or cheat and drop back defensively. Greer will make you pay dearly. This past season with Archbishop Alter, he took 144 three-point attempts and hit them at a clip of 40.3%. He also averaged 16.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.1 steals per contest.

The recruiting ranking and the talent I see don’t match up. Greer is a much better player than the sub-100 ranking says he is on the court. I love that Illinois is likely getting an official visit. This would be a sneaky good addition to an already stacked roster.
