5 key observations from the Illinois football win over Central Michigan
3. Defense was a group effort against Central Michigan
For much of the season thus far, Illinois has played some great defense. We aren’t allowing opposing teams to put points on the board, and it is clearly an improved group from last year.
In the first couple of games, it was one or two defensive players who really stood out the most for the Illini. The Scotts were the stars against Kansas. Xavier Scott had a couple of interceptions, and Miles Scott had one of his own.
It was a different feel in the game against Central Michigan, though. This wasn’t just one or two players making big game-changing plays. Illinois had a true team defensive effort in the 30-9 victory.
Matthew Bailey was all over the field making tackles. He led the Illini with seven tackles on the day. Seth Coleman was a nightmare for Central Michigan. He was great at keeping contain and made residency in the Chippewas backfield throughout the game.
I was impressed with Illinois’ defensive line, especially in the second half against Central Michigan. They came alive and were able to put pressure on Joe Labas frequently. This pressure helped Labas throw an interception to Xavier Scott.
Illinois’ secondary once again looked great. This was the best I have seen Illinois’ front seven look this season, though. I was extremely impressed with the team defensive effort on Saturday.
