I would argue this is one of Illinois football’s biggest tasks in the Bret Bielema era.
The Illini have had some pretty good teams since Bielema took over in December 2020. Most of those squads had a quality defense, which gave Illinois more optimism that we could knock off a big boy.
Illinois is heading into a monster game against Ohio State on Saturday. It is a matchup of a high-powered Buckeyes offense against the most questioned Illinois defense in the Bielema era. There is one stat that gives me some type of hope, though.
Third down conversion percentage.
I know that doesn’t sound like a massive stat that can change the game completely. I am here to tell you that it can, and will, be the difference-maker between Illinois getting blown out of the water and potentially shocking the world.
From an Ohio State defensive standpoint, third down conversion percentage allowed has been a clear marker between wins and losses in 2025 and 2026.
Including the College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes are 14-3 since the beginning of the 2025 campaign. During this stretch, when an opponent has a third down conversion percentage of under 40%, Ohio State is 13-0.
What that means is that the Buckeyes are just 1-3 when they give up third downs at a clip of 40% or higher.
The three losses are two weeks ago to Texas (56.3%), the Big Ten Championship game against Indiana (46.2%), and the College Football Playoff loss to Miami (50.0%).
Ohio State’s only win was against Penn State, which they allowed the Nittany Lions to convert third downs at a clip of 53.3%. Penn State was only down three points at halftime, and they would fire their head coach just weeks before.
The obvious response is, yeah, the more third downs you convert, the more you can score. With Ohio State, there is a clear line, though. Illinois has to hit at least 40% on third down conversions.
Illinois football has the ability to get over that 40% third down conversion mark against Ohio State
Last season against the Buckeyes, the Illini didn’t do so hot when it came to third down conversions. We only converted 28.6% of third downs. This resulted in an 18-point loss.
A positive note is that the Illini are converting third downs this season at a slightly higher clip than in 2025. Illinois is converting 44.44% of third downs this season compared to 41.96% in the 2025 campaign.
Katin Houser is doing a great job not hesitating and getting the ball out of his hands quickly. Illinois has a nice one-two punch in Aidan Laughery and Ca’Lil Valentine that can get the ball over the first down line, too.
Third down conversions are going to be huge for Illinois for more than just points. It is going to keep Ohio State’s offense off the field.
The big worry entering Saturday is the Illini defense. The more the Illinois offense is on the field, the fewer chances Ohio State has to put up a big number. Controlling the clock is crucial, and third down conversions will go a long way in making this game ugly.
Illinois has the massive task of keeping up with one of the best teams in the country. If we want any chance at knocking off, or at least keeping the game close, against Ohio State, the Illini will need to focus on converting third downs. This stat has proven to be a make-or-break for the Buckeyes in the past.
