A former Illinois football quarterback continues his stay in the NFL by re-signing with his team.

Over the past few seasons, the Illini have had a good program. We have developed some impressive NFL talent, but not all players get drafted. In the case of Tommy DeVito, he had to go through the undrafted free agent process.

At the end of the day, this might not have been a bad thing for the talented quarterback. DeVito signed on with the New York Giants two seasons ago, and he was instantly the star of the show. His quality play as a backup turned starter has earned him a new contract with the franchise.

On Thursday afternoon, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com reported that DeVito has re-signed with the Giants. According to Spotrac.com, DeVito’s previous contract was a two-year, $1.665 million deal that expired after the 2024 campaign. The details of his new contact are not disclosed, but he remains in the NFL with a franchise that is continuously in the spotlight.

Tommy DeVito is going to carve out a niche in the NFL that will be lucrative

It would be fun to watch DeVito stick with a team like New York and become the starter for years to come. That is a good goal, but there are only 32 starting jobs in the NFL, and it is tough to be a full-time starter.

For a career to be successful, you don’t have to be a starter, though. DeVito has enough NFL talent to have a great career as a backup. He is a reliable guy who can come into a game and give you good snaps and not ruin everything.

Through two seasons with the Giants, he has thrown for 1,358 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. DeVito also has a 65.3% completion rate, which is pretty solid.

Do I want DeVito to be a starter? Sure, but that doesn’t define a good NFL career. I want him to at least be like a Ryan Fitzpatrick. A good passer of the football who can come in and give you snaps when needed. My guess is that he is likely going to be the backup to a Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders entering the 2025 season.
