Illinois football may have defeated Michigan State on Saturday, but the victory came at the cost of quarterback Katin Houser.

Houser, a fifth-year senior from Anaheim, California, suffered an injury to his left hand in the third quarter while making a tackle during an interception return.

Houser was replaced by freshman Michael Clayton II, who capped off the Illini's overtime win by completing 6-of-8 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. It was an impressive outing that landed Clayton in the record books as the first Illinois true freshman to throw 2+ touchdowns in a Big Ten win.

On Saturday, Clayton led Illinois' offense with great composure and poise, securing a 38-37 win in East Lansing after Michigan State scored 24 points in the second half. This was a much-needed win for Bielema and Co., highlighted by Clayton's 25-yard touchdown pass to Hudson Clement in overtime.

Clayton will look to continue his success on October 24 when the Oregon Ducks come to town. This will be a tougher test for the freshman quarterback, as Oregon ranks No. 57 in scoring defense (22 PPG) compared to Michigan State's No. 88-ranked defense (25.67 PPG).

Illinois football is preparing for the future with Katin Houser sidelined due to injury

Clayton, a Miami, Florida, product, was a member of the class of 2026 who officially committed to Illinois on November 10, 2024. He was a three-star prospect from Miami Edison who ranked No. 56 in the country at his position.

It was only a matter of time until we saw Clayton take the field for the Illini, and he did it in one of the most important games of the season. Illinois has struggled to find a signature win greater than UAB, and the true freshman helped secure that for them against the Spartans.

Clayton took advantage of his opportunity in a big way. He became the living embodiment of the phrase next man up. His ability to be a pocket passer and his gunslinging arm were on full display on Saturday as he helped push the ball down the field.

It is safe to say that Clayton is prepared for the big moment, and he is going to need that mentality for when Oregon comes to town. The Ducks have flirted with the AP Top 25 all season long, so they are certainly not lacking as a unit.

Bielema and the Illini will have the bye week to get Clayton up to speed and ready for what's ahead. With what we saw against the Spartans, let's just say that next Saturday has become a lot more intriguing.
