You can tell the make of a team when the chips are down, and for the Illinois football program, the chips were down on Saturday.
Illinois had to finish the Michigan State game without starting quarterback Katin Houser. He went out late in the third quarter and never returned. In stepped Michael Clayton II, and the results from the true freshman were beyond expectations.
Giving a true freshman an entire week to prep and then starting a game in the Big Ten is usually rattling for an 18-year-old. On Saturday, Clayton had zero time to prep. He was thrown into a one-score game that had Michigan State with all the momentum.
This didn’t affect Clayton. In fact, he came into the game with the eyes of an entire fanbase on him and proved that pressure really does make diamonds.
Clayton dazzled on the field. In one quarter and one throw in overtime, Clayton was 6-of-8 for 88 yards and two touchdowns. These were his first throws of his college career. He came out and did that against a Big Ten team on the road.
Honestly, it would have been completely understandable if Clayton came into the game and laid an egg. Illinois can’t move the football, and Michigan State takes the game at the end because we can’t do anything on offense.
That wasn’t the case at all, though. Clayton showed poise in the pocket and led the Illini at such a young age. The throw up the seam in overtime for a touchdown was special. He didn’t hesitate. Clayton knew what he was seeing, and he hit his wide receiver in stride.
Illinois football might have found a gem in Michael Clayton II
The first passes from Clayton were impressive. He was in such a high-pressure situation and, as I said, that pressure made diamonds. Illinois also might have found a gem in all of this, too.
Clayton wasn’t a highly-rated recruit. Coming out of Miami, he was only a three-star who was the No. 1360 player in the class of 2026. He did have some big offers, like Illinois, Auburn, and Baylor, to name a few, but Clayton wasn’t one of those four- or five-star recruits.
Before Clayton won the game for Illinois, I mentioned on social media that if he led the Illini to a game-winning drive, he should start the rest of the 2026 season.
Well, I still believe that, and it looks like that will happen. Houser is likely out for the season, so Clayton is now Illinois’ starting quarterback. He will have a chance to prep for the future and build on his limited success against Michigan State. What he does the rest of 2026 will lay the groundwork for what is to come in 2027.
