Illinois finally secured its first conference win this season, but it came with a major cost. After already losing running back Ca-Lil Valentine for the season, Illinois quarterback Katin Houser is now out indefinitely with a broken hand. The overtime win over Michigan State was a real boost going into the bye week, but the latest AP Poll might have just taken some wind out of the Illini's sails moving forward.
Head coach Bret Bielema and his squad needed a gritty win, which is exactly what they got against the Spartans to even the Illini's record to 3-3 before the bye week. With six games left on the schedule, Illinois no longer has an easy road, with half of their games against ranked opponents and two of the other three teams receiving votes in the poll.

Based on the Week 6 AP Top 25, Illinois will now end its season at No. 12 UCLA, vs. No. 17 Iowa, and at No. 25 Northwestern. Before those three games, the Illini face Oregon, who recently fell out of the rankings after its second loss of the season; Maryland, which will hopefully be an easier game; and then Nebraska, which is 5-1 and nearly took down the reigning National Champion Indiana Hoosiers.
With only three wins so far this season, Illinois has a tough road ahead of them to simply be bowl-eligible, especially with three ranked opponents left on the schedule, with the potential for that number to rise to five.
Illinois could struggle to even reach bowl-eligibility this season
After back-to-back regular seasons with nine-plus wins, Illinois could struggle to even reach bowl eligibility this season. Illinois is 3-3 on the year, but was a two-point conversion from 2-4, and the injuries continue to pile up for Bielema and his team.
It has been a steady rotation of offensive linemen for the Illini, with injuries plaguing the line. Wide receiver Jayshone Platt, who was listed as probable on the early injury reports, was held out again vs. Michigan State, still dealing with an undisclosed injury he suffered in fall camp. Valentine had season-ending surgery after an injury he suffered against Purdue, and now Houser is banged up.
While it is unknown if Houser will truly be out for the remainder of the campaign, he will at least be out for a while, making backup Michael Clayton the projected starter going forward. Luckily, Clayton will have extra time to get used to working with the starters with a bye week in Champaign, but between injuries, a 3-3 record, and an infinitely tougher schedule to end the season, a bowl game is more in question than ever.
There is still a lot of time between now and some of these matchups for the Illini, and teams seem to be falling out of the Top 25 left and right, but Illinois has hit roadblock after roadblock of late, and it might be time to start thinking about 2027 and what this Illinois team has for the future.
