Latest 2027 Big Ten recruiting rankings have Bret Bielema falling from grace

In the last two seasons, Illinois has won a total of 19 games, going 10-3 with a win in the Citrus Bowl in 2024 and 9-4 with a win in the Music City Bowl in 2025. Head coach Bret Bielema seems to have found a winning formula in Champaign, or at least a winning quarterback.

As much as it hurts to pump the brakes on all that winning talk, a big reason for Illinois' success the last two seasons was the excellent play of quarterback Luke Altmeyer. Now with the Detroit Lions, Almeyer is trying to make his way in the NFL, while Illinois now has to face life without its biggest star.

Illinois is getting ready to head into the unknown, pardon the Frozen pun, on the football field, and it may not just be for this season. As the 2027 recruiting cycle is wrapping up, the rankings are becoming more and more solidified, and it doesn't look good for Bielema and Illinois.

After having the No. 6 Big Ten 2026 recruiting class last year, the Illini are near the bottom, coming in at No. 17 in the conference for the 2027 class, according to 247Sports. With only 15 commits, Illinois is also sitting outside the Top 50 nationally by 247's rankings.

Is Bret Bielema losing his recruiting touch at Illinois?

This is a brutal drop for Bielema and his recruiting staff, especially with also having the No. 26 class last for 2026, with 38 commits. The biggest question has to be where the disconnect is this offseason compared to last. Bielema wasn't able to get half as many commitments as he did last year, so what happened?

There really isn't a clear-cut answer as to how this happened. Illinois has had back-to-back successful seasons, granted, the 10-3 season with the win over South Carolina in the Citrus Cheez-It Bowl certainly got people excited to be in Champaign. However, a 9-4 win is just one more loss, so it doesn't seem as though that is the reason.

Bielema could be losing his touch, but when looking at his history of recruiting at Illinois, it is as up and down as they come. Illinois has had high recruiting classes in the Big Ten, but has been middle of the pack in other years.

For the 2027 class, Bielema was only able to bring in two four-star recruits, neither of which are ranked very highly at their position. The rest of the class is composed of three-star recruits, which isn't to say there is anything wrong with that. Indiana is the perfect time to prove that a high school rating doesn't have to define how a player performs in college.

This will be a telling season for Bielema and Co., especially without Altmeyer and ECU transfer Katin Houser taking over. While there are some favorable matchups for Illinois on the schedule, the level of success the Illini have this season could easily affect the success on the recruiting trail in the offseason.
