Just about seven months after leading Illinois basketball to a Final Four, Keaton Wagler set foot on an NBA court.

The Los Angeles Clippers started their 2026-27 campaign on Wednesday night in hopes of putting the Kawhi Leonard era behind them and starting fresh. Opening night ended up being everything they had hoped.

Los Angeles beat the Sacramento Kings 121-96, and despite Wagler not starting for the Clippers, he went off and had a great debut.

Wagler played 29 minutes, which was the third-most on the team. He finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Wagler was also efficient from the floor, going 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range.

These numbers were so impressive that it puts Wagler is some historical conversations. According to the Real App, Wagler’s debut of 15+ points, 5+ rebounds, 5+ assists, and shooting 50% or better from the field was the youngest player to accomplish those numbers in a debut since LeBron James.

That is some impressive company. I have heard that LeBron guy is pretty good at his job. The debut from Wagler was more impressive than just the numbers, too.

When you watch Wagler on the court, you can tell that he just gets the game. There are some rookies and veterans, for that matter, who just process things slowly. It is like trying to force a square peg in a round hole. Not for Wagler.

Wagler understands the game so well. He understands spacing, which is crucial in the NBA. With so many great athletes, having the proper spacing is the only way to get open looks. Wagler was able to space the floor well, and his teammates found him for good looks from the corner.

I also love Wagler’s ability to run the court and his vision. He can see the plays developing and keeps his eyes moving. Wagler is one of those players who instantly makes his teammates better. We saw it at Illinois, and now we are seeing it with the Clippers.

Keaton Wagler’s efficiency makes him such a valuable player for the Los Angeles Clippers

One of the biggest things about Wagler’s debut that most people won’t talk about today is how efficient he was in his debut.

Wagler’s shooting alone is impressive, going 50% from the field and three-point arc, but there were other numbers that stood out to me when it comes to efficiency.

Going 4-of-4 from the free throw line is huge. Wagler played 29 minutes and, as a rookie, only had one turnover in the game. That is a wild stat for someone playing their first NBA game. A 5:1 assist-to-turnover ratio is awesome to see.

At the end of the day, Wagler’s efficiency led to a +14 box +/-. The Clippers haven’t had this type of rookie hype in a long time. Wagler is going to take that hype and turn it into expectations if he keeps playing at a high level. The future is bright in Los Angeles.
