When Illinois finished the 2025 season, head coach Bret Bielema knew his star quarterback Luke Altmyer wasn't returning to the Illini and that he needed to find a replacement. He had the opportunity to go the home-grown route, developing one of his younger players by throwing him out on the field, or hit the transfer portal for some experience.
Bielema chose option No. 2, bringing in Katin Houser from ECU, who also has Big Ten experience. Houser began his college career at Michigan State and is now back in the conference with the Illini, and is already fitting in nicely. Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. is loving what he is seeing from his new QB, even if he isn't showing perfection on the field.
"There is no perfect player; there is no such thing as a perfect player, so does he have things that we're working on and trying to improve? Absolutely, and he attacks those on a daily basis," Lunney said. "He's the leader of our team and our guys see that, and it came real organically for him, and I think that's only going to strengthen at game time when he goes out and plays well."

Katin Houser's Big Ten experience and leadership qualities are what make him perfect for Illinois
Luke Altmyer was a huge reason for Illinois' success in the last two seasons, but all players in college must move on, and his focus is now on making the 53-man roster with the Detroit Lions. For Bielema at Illinois, it is getting Houser ready for the 2026 season, but according to Lunney, he is pretty close to it.
Not only has Houser been progressing in practice, but he has also made great connections with his teammates, which can be tough for a new transfer to do so quickly. Houser is already the leader of this Illinois team, as Lunney said, proving how his leadership skills have revealed themselves in the locker room.
Those leadership skills are half the battle when it comes to getting a locker room on your side. The other half is obviously talent, which it's clear Houser has. Coming from ECU, Houser threw for 3,300 passing yards last season with 19 touchdowns and only six interceptions. That was over 1,300 more passing yards than his 2024 season and five fewer interceptions,
Granted, some may look at ECU and think it's just a Group of Six school, which, yes, the Pirates hail from the American Conference, but it isn't like Houser doesn't have a lick of Power Conference experience. Before his two-year stint at ECU, Houser was at Michigan State for two seasons.
In the 2023 season, Houser even took over starting duties, throwing for 1,130 passing yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. Those numbers aren't great by any means, but he does have experience playing against the giants of the Big Ten and will have an idea of what to expect.
This Illinois team is also better than the 2023 Michigan State team that went 4-8 with a six-game losing streak in the middle of the year. Now, with the talent that Bielema has with this Illinois team, Houser will have a wider range of talent to work with and hopefully take the Illini over the hump of being a true contender in the Big Ten.
